Do LED Strip Lights Remember Settings After a Power Cut?

LEDStripStar Engineering Team 6 Minutes Read

A conventional LED strip does not remember a brightness level or scene by itself. Its controller, driver or upstream lighting system determines what happens when power returns. Some controllers restore a previous state; others start off, turn on at a preset level, or follow a physical switch. Buy against a documented startup behavior and confirm it with the complete sample system.

A shop display may need to reopen at the agreed brightness. A hotel room may need to stay dark so the lights do not wake a guest. A door-controlled cabinet has its own switching requirement. Specify the default for the actual application. This guide concerns normal lighting controls, not emergency-lighting approval or a wiring design.

Define what “remember” means for the project

“Memory function” is too vague for a purchase order. State what should happen after loss of supply, including whether the light was off before the interruption.

Required resultQuestion for the control supplier
Stay off until someone operates the switchDoes startup remain off even if the previous scene was on?
Resume the previous lighting stateAre on/off, brightness and the relevant color settings all retained?
Start at a fixed display settingCan a saved startup scene be selected independently of the last state?
Follow a wall switch or sensorWhich command takes priority when the controller restarts?
Recover without a working appWhich functions operate locally, and which require the network?

Restoring the last state is different from recalling the last scene selected in an app. A dimmed level may be held only temporarily, or a particular save action may be required. Ask about the exact controller model and firmware rather than transferring a claim from a similar-looking unit.

Find out which device stores the settings

For a single-color constant-voltage strip, the controller may store the on/off state and brightness. A tunable-white arrangement also needs a defined white-tone setting. In an addressable system, distinguish the controller’s stored program from the pixel strip receiving its commands; buying addressable LEDs alone does not establish restart behavior.

Shelly’s RGBW2 control documentation lists separate power-on choices for on, off, restore last mode and switch-controlled behavior, with a save action to confirm settings. These options apply to that device; check the documentation for the controller being purchased.

Identify the strip separately. The catalog includes an 8mm CRI80 single-color COB strip and an 8mm tunable-white COB strip. Their light-source specifications do not establish controller memory, app compatibility or a complete system’s startup sequence. Confirm the selected voltage variant and compatible output channels before testing.

Test recovery with the equipment actually being supplied

Have the installer or control supplier arrange a safe supply interruption using the intended switching equipment. Do not disconnect exposed live wiring. Record the controller model, firmware, saved configuration and test conditions so a later replacement can be checked against the same requirement.

  1. Set the light off, interrupt supply, then restore it. Record the resulting state.
  2. Repeat with the agreed dimmed level and, where applicable, white tone or color. Check whether the actual output returns, not merely whether the app displays the old setting.
  3. Test recovery with the app unavailable and with the network recovering later. Note what works locally and what waits for another service.
  4. Operate the wall switch, sensor or schedule after recovery. Look for a later command that overwrites the startup state.
  5. Repeat after saving the final configuration. Keep a backup of the supported configuration export or a settings record, without placing passwords in public project documents.

Do not use repeated rapid power cycling as a generic reset or acceptance procedure. Some products use power-cycle sequences for factory reset; Shelly’s documentation distinguishes resetting from rebooting and warns that a reset deletes settings. Follow the exact manufacturer’s instructions if a reset is necessary.

If the sample fails, first check whether the state was saved and whether another control command is changing it. Then check the manufacturer’s stated recovery behavior. Replacing the LED strip will not fix a controller that lacks the required persistence.

Put the observed behavior into the order

Specify the required startup state for each zone, the retained settings, acceptable dependencies and the sample test used to approve it. Ask whether a replacement controller can receive the same configuration and who will restore it during maintenance.

For a multi-zone project, add these records to the lighting handover package. The operator needs to know which settings return and who can restore the configuration after replacement. A checkbox saying “memory: yes” leaves both questions unanswered.
