The best starting configuration for most shelves
For a typical dry supermarket shelf, start by testing a 24V white strip in an aluminum profile, with the light source hidden behind the shelf lip. Choose color quality and output from the merchandise, viewing angle and shelf spacing, not from a generic retail label.
No one strip is best for every department. A gondola carrying boxed goods needs a different detail from a glass-door refrigerator, a cosmetics bay or an adjustable promotional shelf. The seven configurations below solve seven different purchasing problems.
Each configuration uses a model listed in the LEDStripStar catalog on September 10, 2026. Approve the final order specification with the actual profile, driver, cable length, shelf and merchandise.
How these seven configurations were selected
We screened the catalog for a distinct reason to buy, not for the largest LED count. The shortlist covers color-sensitive products, visible light lines, short shelf modules, long gondolas, high-output accents, exposed cleaning zones and changeable white light.
The Illuminating Engineering Society’s shelf-lighting article recommends starting with what will be displayed, the back surface and whether shelves move. It also points out that the source should be blocked from direct view and that drivers need accessible, ventilated locations. Those decisions come before model selection.
Color quality also needs more than a headline CRI number. The CIE’s 2025 position statement on colour-quality metrics recommends broader use of its general colour fidelity index. If merchandise color is commercially important, ask for the color data your lighting designer specifies and compare samples on the real products.
Seven useful supermarket shelf configurations
1. High-color-fidelity SMD strip for produce and packaged goods
The SMD2835 8mm 120LED CRI98 strip is a candidate when merchandise color is the main decision. Its catalog configuration is DC12/24V, 10W/m, 8mm PCB and CRI98, with 3000K, 4000K and 6500K options listed.
Best use: produce edges, cosmetics, premium packaged food and any bay where the buyer will compare colors under the shelf light.
Check before ordering: request sample data for the selected CCT and production bin. Evaluate the actual merchandise beside the store’s ambient lighting. High CRI does not correct glare, uneven shelf coverage or a poor CCT choice.
2. High-color-fidelity COB strip for a visible light line
The COB 8mm 320LED CRI95 strip combines a continuous-looking emitting surface with a catalog CRI95 configuration. It is listed at DC12/24V, 12W/m and 8mm PCB.
Best use: shallow profiles, glass displays and shelf details where individual SMD points would remain visible.
Check before ordering: test the chosen diffuser and setback. COB reduces visible points, but a shallow transparent cover can still show unevenness, joints or brightness variation.
3. One-LED-cut SMD strip for short and irregular shelf bays
The SMD2835 one-LED-cut strip is listed with 120 LEDs/m, 8mm PCB, 10W/m and DC12/24V options. Its practical advantage is cutting flexibility rather than maximum output.
Best use: mixed-width merchandising modules, display boxes and short shelves where standard cut intervals create dark gaps.
Check before ordering: measure every shelf and include connector or solder-joint space. A short cut interval reduces waste, but every additional joint adds assembly labor and another inspection point.
4. DC24V long-run strip for continuous gondolas
The SMD2835 20m no-voltage-drop catalog model is listed at DC24V, 120 LEDs/m, 12W/m, 8mm PCB and CRI90. It is a candidate when a buyer wants fewer feed breaks across a long gondola.
Best use: long, straight shelf banks with planned cable routes and accessible distribution points.
Check before ordering: treat 20m no voltage drop as the product configuration name, not permission to skip engineering. Measure feed and far-end voltage and compare brightness on a full-length loaded sample. Controller rating, cable size and total driver load still apply.
5. High-output SMD strip for bright endcaps
The SMD2835 8mm 180LED strip is listed at 16W/m and 1600 lm/m, with DC12/24V options and an 8mm PCB. It offers more output than the 10W/m shelf candidates above.
Best use: promotional endcaps, deeper shelving or high ambient light where a measured mock-up shows that the extra output is useful.
Check before ordering: do not select it from lumens alone. Review profile contact, temperature, glare and driver loading. If the shelf lip cannot shield the source, a lower-output strip with better optics may look better.
6. IP68 SMD strip for an exposed cleaning zone
The DC24V SMD2835 120LED IP68 strip is listed at 8W/m on an 8mm PCB. The silicone construction gives a starting point for zones where splashes or cleaning exposure are documented.
Best use: exposed lower shelves or case details where the buyer’s risk assessment calls for a sealed strip construction.
Check before ordering: the finished system is only as protected as its cut ends, cable entries, connectors and installation damage. Confirm chemical compatibility with the store’s cleaning products and test a completed assembly. Do not assume the strip rating covers the driver or every joint.
7. Tunable-white COB strip for changing displays
The COB 8mm 480LED CCT-tunable strip is listed with warm-white plus white channels, CRI90, DC12/24V and 10+10W/m channel power. It lets a controlled shelf scene move between two white channels.
Best use: seasonal promotion bays, bakery or hospitality-style zones where the operator has a defined reason to change the white appearance.
Check before ordering: specify the controller, control range and maximum simultaneous channel load. Test preset scenes instead of giving store staff an unrestricted color slider. The US Department of Energy’s color-tunable lighting overview notes that controls are more complex and that sources with the same nominal CCT can render objects differently.
Quick comparison for procurement

Use the table to choose two or three samples. Do not send all seven into a price comparison when only one fits the shelf detail.
Build one full shelf mock-up before approving a store rollout
A reel on a white test bench cannot predict glare, product shadows or reflections from glossy packaging. Build at least one shelf bay with production-intent materials.
The mock-up should include:
- actual shelf width, depth, lip and back surface;
- selected strip, aluminum profile and diffuser;
- driver, controller and longest cable arrangement;
- representative light and dark packaging;
- the store’s ambient light operating at its planned level;
- normal shopper eye positions, including seated or child-height views where relevant;
- an adjustable shelf moved through its permitted positions.
Measure input power, loaded voltage and illuminance at agreed points. Photograph the shelf with fixed camera settings. Then leave the system operating long enough to check temperature and adhesive movement.
If two samples appear similar, prefer the one that gives the installer fewer joints, the store team easier access and procurement a clearer repeat-order specification.
Send suppliers a shelf schedule, not a generic inquiry
For each shelf type, provide:
- department and merchandise type;
- shelf dimensions, quantity and whether positions move;
- desired visual result and direct-view angles;
- strip voltage, CCT, color-quality requirement and dimming need;
- maximum strip length and cable length per branch;
- profile, diffuser and mounting method;
- dry, refrigerated, splash or cleaning exposure;
- driver location, access and ventilation;
- connector, cable exit and strain-relief detail;
- sample length, mock-up test and acceptance record;
- production quantities grouped by model and cut length.
Ask the supplier to mark every difference from the schedule. A lower unit price is not comparable if it changes PCB width, power, cut interval, color specification, protection construction or reel length.
