How to Specify LED Strip Lead Wires for Bulk Orders

Put the lead wire on the product drawing

A bulk order should state the lead-wire length, conductor size and material, insulation, color or channel order, strip-end connection, free-end termination, exit direction and strain relief. “Prewired LED strip” leaves too many decisions to production.

Measure length from a defined reference point. Specify whether the dimension covers the cable outside the strip body, the total conductor from the solder pad, or the usable free length after a connector is fitted. Add a tolerance and show the drawing view used for measurement.

Seven fields that remove ambiguity

1. Strip end. Identify the exact model, voltage, PCB width, cut mark and pad layout.
2. Cable construction. State conductor count, conductor material and cross-section or accepted wire standard.
3. Insulation. Record insulation type, outer dimensions, color and any temperature or environmental requirement supplied by the project engineer.
4. Polarity or channel order. Define positive and negative for white strip, or the exact RGB, RGBW, tunable-white or data order.
5. Length and tolerance. Draw the reference points and distinguish strip-to-wire, extension and free-tail lengths.
6. Exit direction. Show straight, left, right, rear or side exit relative to the LED surface and first cut section.
7. Free end. Specify bare wire, stripped and tinned end, ferrule, plug or project connector, including mating part where applicable.

For protected strip or neon flex, add the cable-entry position, end cap, seal and permitted bend immediately after the entry. The finished outer dimensions may decide whether the assembly fits the profile or sign return.

Size the cable for the downstream branch

The lead carries the current of the strip connected after it. Calculate branch current from the selected model and length, then check voltage drop, connector rating, terminal size, ambient temperature and bundling. Our wire-gauge guide explains the required inputs.

A short factory pigtail does not correct an undersized field cable. Conversely, a very thick cable can be difficult to solder, seal or route through a narrow profile. The drawing should show the complete transition from PCB pad to field wiring.

For RGB and addressable products, a matching pin count is insufficient. Confirm channel order, common polarity, controller protocol and data direction. Review the exact model in the RGB and addressable range before approving a harness.

Cut the sample to the real installation detail

Ask for a production-intent sample with the ordered strip, lead, solder or connector, seal and free-end termination. Fit it into the actual channel or fixture. Check cable exit, cover clearance, bend, pull on the strain-relieved section and polarity. Power the planned branch and inspect the joint after warm-up.

Record photographs, dimensions and electrical checks in the signed sample sheet. Keep one approved sample with the buyer and one with production. Changes to lead length, conductor, connector or exit direction should trigger a new drawing revision.

Make the wire easy to identify at receiving

The reel or assembly label should include model, voltage, cable option, exit direction, length and batch reference. Prevent tight cable kinks and pressure on solder joints during packing. If several harness versions share one carton, use separate bags and visible item codes.

Receiving inspection can sample lead length, polarity, channel order, connector fit, solder appearance, strain relief and continuity. For protected assemblies, inspect the specified seal without assuming that a visual check proves an ingress rating.
