6 Best LED Strip Configurations for Display Cabinets

LEDStripStar Sourcing Team 17 Minutes Read

Start with a 24V white strip in a shielded aluminum profile

For most dry retail display cabinets, start the mock-up with a 24V white strip in an aluminum profile, positioned near the front vertical edge or behind the front shelf lip. Choose the color quality and output from the merchandise, cabinet finish and viewing angle.

There is no single best strip for watches, folded textiles, ceramics and cosmetics. A narrow cabinet may need a 3mm PCB. A color-sensitive product may justify higher color fidelity. Short shelves benefit from close cut spacing, while a tall display wall may need more output and careful thermal management.

The six configurations below match different cabinet problems and use models listed in the LEDStripStar catalog on September 12, 2026.

How the six configurations were selected

We reviewed current catalog models against six purchasing decisions:

  • merchandise color accuracy;
  • profile and joinery width;
  • light-line smoothness in reflective cabinets;
  • short module length and dark ends;
  • adjustable display appearance;
  • output for large or dark-backed cases.

Color quality cannot be reduced to one headline number. The CIE’s 2025 position statement on colour-quality metrics recommends wider use of the CIE General Colour Fidelity Index alongside the established CIE General Colour Rendering Index during the transition. When merchandise color affects sales, ask for the color data specified by the lighting designer and judge production samples on the real products.

Glare and reflections also depend on geometry. The US Department of Energy’s 2024 school lighting guidance notes that intense exposed sources are more likely to produce direct glare and that glare is strongly affected by the relative position of source and viewed object. Display cabinets need the same practical check: hide the source, then view the merchandise from the customer’s path.

Six useful display-cabinet configurations

1. High-color-fidelity SMD strip for textiles and cosmetics

The SMD2835 8mm 120LED CRI98 strip is the catalog candidate when merchandise color is the first decision. Its listed configuration is DC12/24V, 10W/m, 8mm PCB and CRI98, with 3000K, 4000K and 6500K options.

Best use: cosmetics, textiles, art materials and displays where customers compare subtle colors.

Check in the mock-up: the actual merchandise under the strip and the store’s ambient light. Confirm batch color consistency as well as the initial sample.

2. Three-millimeter COB strip for very narrow joinery

The COB 3mm 400LED CRI90 strip fits details where a normal-width PCB and profile will not fit. The catalog lists DC12/24V, 7W/m and 500 lm/m.

Best use: slim vertical mullions, miniature cases and narrow routed shelves.

Check in the mock-up: the complete profile and cable exit. A 3mm PCB does not mean every connector, end cap or lead also fits a 3mm slot.

3. One-LED-cut SMD strip for short shelves

The SMD2835 8mm 120LED one-LED-cut strip is intended for projects that need short adjustment increments. Its catalog entry lists DC12/24V, 10W/m, 8mm PCB and CRI80.

Best use: repeated small compartments, staggered shelves and cabinet families with many short lengths.

Check in the mock-up: illuminated length after the connector and end cap are installed. Close cut spacing reduces wasted strip but does not automatically remove dark ends.

4. High-color-quality COB strip for reflective glass cases

The COB 8mm 320LED CRI95 strip combines a continuous COB light line with a listed CRI95 configuration. The catalog entry is DC12/24V, 12W/m and 1000 lm/m.

Best use: watches, jewelry, ceramics and glassware where reflected LED dots would distract from the product.

Check in the mock-up: reflections from every customer approach. COB reduces discrete points, but a bright unshielded line can still reflect in glass or polished metal.

5. Tunable-white COB strip for changing collections

The COB 8mm 480LED tunable-white strip is a DC12/24V, 8mm, CRI90 catalog option using warm-white and white channels.

Best use: galleries, seasonal retail and multi-brand displays where the same cabinet holds different materials over time.

Check in the mock-up: controller channel order, usable color-temperature range, output at intermediate settings and repeatability across several cabinets. Both channels affect power planning; do not size the system from one color setting alone.

6. High-output SMD strip for large dark-backed displays

The SMD2835 10mm 240LED strip is the high-output candidate in this shortlist. Its catalog entry lists DC12/24V, 18W/m, 1800 lm/m and a 10mm PCB.

Best use: tall merchandise walls, deep cabinets and dark finishes that absorb more light.

Check in the mock-up: glare, heat, diffuser loss and far-end voltage. More lumens are not automatically better in a shallow glass case.

Compare the six by the problem they solve

ConfigurationMain reason to shortlistImportant limitation to test
SMD2835 8mm CRI98Color-sensitive merchandiseVisible points depend on profile and diffuser
COB 3mm 400LED CRI90Very narrow mounting detailConnectors and cable exits need more space
SMD2835 one-LED-cutShort repeated shelf lengthsEnd hardware still creates unlit length
COB 8mm 320LED CRI95Smooth line and high color qualityReflections remain possible if source is exposed
COB 8mm 480LED tunable whiteOne cabinet for changing collectionsController, channel and power planning are more complex
SMD2835 10mm 240LEDDeep or dark-backed large displaysHigher power needs a suitable thermal path

Use the table to choose two candidates for a mock-up, not to select a bulk model from a webpage. The profile, diffuser and cabinet can change the result more than a small difference between strip specifications.

Test the cabinet with real merchandise and glass

A useful sample cabinet includes the production glass, shelves, back panel, profile, diffuser, driver, controller and cable route. Place actual merchandise in the display. White cards do not reveal how black velvet, metallic packaging or skin-tone cosmetics will look.

Review the sample from standing and seated eye heights where relevant. Walk past it rather than looking only from the center. Check:

  1. direct view of the strip or diffuser edge;
  2. LED dots and bright lines reflected in front or side glass;
  3. color differences between shelves and between multiple cabinets;
  4. shadows created by shelf brackets and tall products;
  5. dark ends at connectors and corners;
  6. output after the system has warmed up;
  7. dimming stability and control behavior;
  8. access for replacing a strip, driver or controller.

Measure power and light output under recorded conditions if they are order requirements. The lumen-output verification guide explains why lux at one point and total lumens are not interchangeable.

Send the cabinet drawing with the strip length

Include these details in the request:

  • cabinet width, height, depth and shelf positions;
  • glass type, back-panel finish and dominant merchandise colors;
  • mounting channel width and maximum profile depth;
  • customer viewing directions and whether the source may be visible;
  • target color temperature and color-quality requirement;
  • strip length per cabinet and number of cabinets per power branch;
  • dimming or tunable-white control method;
  • connector, lead direction and service-access requirements;
  • acceptable dark-end and visible-dot condition;
  • sample quantity and mock-up review procedure;
  • packaging method that prevents similar shelf lengths from being mixed.

The cabinet-lighting application page provides a planning overview. Send drawings and merchandise photos through the display-cabinet quote form so the strip, profile and control details can be compared before sampling.

Catalog values help narrow the sample list. They do not predict the finished cabinet without its profile, diffuser, glass, finish, wiring and driver. Confirm the final model and production sample against the written order specification.
